Frontgate® Pineapple Hurricane Lantern Review

frontgate pineapple hurricane lantern

I just purchased the Frontgate® Pineapple Hurricane Lantern. I selected the large size because, at that time, the medium pineapple lantern was not available. At first, I thought it was too large for my 80" rectangular table but now I think it's perfect. I also asked other people (who would tell me the truth), like my mother, if they thought it was too large, and unanimously, everyone thought it was appropriately sized. Take a peak at my Video Review of the Pineapple Hurricane Lantern.

Dimensions
$79.00 - Medium Pineapple Hurricane (63712): 6-1/2" dia. x 12-1/4"H, 4 lbs.
$99.00 - Large Pineapple Hurricane (44843): 8-1/2" dia. x 17"H, 7 lbs.

If you are looking for a smaller, less expensive version of the Frontgate® Pineapple Lantern, The Lakeside Collection may meet your needs.

$20.99 & Free Shipping -The Lakeside Collection Pineapple HurricaneLantern - 4-3/4" dia. x 9-3/8"H.  It comes with a battery-operated candle but you can remove the base.  I'd suggest using a 4" Firefly Glass Refillable Pillar Candle.

This hurricane lantern is handblown so each piece may be somewhat different. If you plan on using them side-by-side, I would ask Frontgate to make sure they are as similar as possible. Some folks have made comments about them being somewhat lopsided and not sitting well on the base.  Mine is fine, in my opinion.

As you can see from the photos, the color is more of a dark brown; very little in the way of gold highlights as shown on the Frontgate® website.

This is exactly the type of hurricane lantern where you would want to use an oil candle or battery-operated candle for several reasons. Reason 1: This is a beautiful piece and I wouldn't want to worry about wax melting all over the base even when not lit; wax removal would be difficult and mar the surface. Reason 2: Soot will build up if you don't use the right fuel or wax candle.

I have three options, eco-friendly Safe & Green Lamp Oil, CLEAN Lamp Oil, or Paraffin Lamp Oil. Reason 3: I think a candle should be a certain height in a lantern to maximize the beauty; not too low and not too high.

In the movie, I'm using our Ambiance Frosted Oil Lamp which is comprised of 2 pieces, a 60mm votive oil candle that slides inside of the frosted candle holder. The candle holder is a little over 4 inches tall and the top of the flame is about 3-1/2". I think the height is just right.

By request, I shot another video showing a 5" clear glass pillar oil candle inside of the pineapple hurricane lantern. See my comments below.

I would highly recommend the Frontgate® Pineapple Hurricane Lantern with the caveat that if you are super picky, you may find some flaws. Look closely at the photos and video to make sure this meets your standards.

I'd be happy to take more photos if anyone would like; just post a comment.

I shot the following video for ... Diane, a.k.a "directed" to show her how the 5" refillable pillar candle would look in the candle lantern. See her comment below.
